When the timber comes to the sawmill, it will be measured and sorted by species in dimension classes. Storage of the dimension sorted timber today is above ground but not in water, which was previously common. During the hot season, sprinkled logs are not damaged by blue stain fungi, insects or cracking. Moisture content in the log is about the same during storage as at harvest. Hardwood is usually in separated hardwood sawmill.

Before the decomposition, timber is usually debarked in a rotary machine. The stock carried by a rotor with cutting tools to rub away the bark.

Root Reduction

Rhizomes may have strong root undulation or heavy buttresses. These can cause difficulties later in decomposition. Therefore, the log passes a root cutter, which typically works as a lathe, giving the stock a more cylindrical shape.
